During the first half of the 19th century, Wales primarily focused on the extraction of metals, precious metals and slate, while the second half saw the rise of coal mining and the metal industry. Today, the service sector dominates the economy. Economically, Wales resembles a small state, with GDP per capita below the European average. The unemployment rate of 6.7 percent is also significantly above the UK average of 5.5 percent (2015). Crime is slightly above the European average, leading many Welsh residents to feel unsafe.
